Jan
Shade Beach was one of the very first artists to sign on with Crazy Mountain when
the company was formed. That was ten years ago…and since then Jan has broadened
her artistic horizons to the point where her work is seen on numerous consumer
products.
Starting out in the craft end of the industry, her art leaned
toward the country look and, not surprisingly, focused on the lucrative Christmas
holiday season. Once she started licensing her work she found that while she was
developing a reputation and a following, business reality dictated that she adjust
to changing trends and constantly freshen up her look if she was going to achieve
long-lasting success. Jan developed what she calls a“whimsical contemporary”painting
style. To understand what she means by this, one need only look at her delightful
“Dancing Reindeers” as they cavort in a forest of brightly colored
trees.
“My work takes me in so many different directions
that it’s wonderfully exciting. It seems like my brain doesn’t ever
turn off. My ideas come from all over
the place because a lot of different things can trigger your imagination. Sometimes
I dream things and I have a pad of paper next to my bed because if I don’t
write them down the ideas can go away and never come back. Sometimes I’ll
be in the shower, or I may come across a saying that will trigger an image. And
to think that I can do it on my own schedule and still be able to enjoy my family
is fantastic. It makes for a busy, but wonderful life. It really is like a dream
come true.”
